She tells him it divorces him from humanity. He tells her he and humanity got together too young. She reminds him he is great at medicine, reading people, and understanding people. House looks at the four Vicodin he has managed to collect. They start thinking about toxins , but something that only Nick has been exposed to. Sykes comes in and catches House with the file.
House goes to get Nick to do an environmental scan. He notices Nick is getting weaker too. Nick just wants to try to phone his girlfriend. Nick throws him out. She wants to know why he lied about being in for drug use and not assaulting his ex-girlfriend. House uses the foil from the gum to create a short-circuit in a wall outlet and starts a fire.
He then goes to the clinic. When the fire distracts Adams, he grabs some Vicodin. Nick comes back, but House has lost interest. However, when he looks back at Nick, he notices his lips are swelling. Nick goes into anaphylactic shock and House calls for help. Alvarez finally shows up and allows House to finish so Nick can breathe again.
He finally takes three Vicodin, leaving him with only seventeen. House is still scheduled to be released. He looks at his remaining Vicodin and takes two more. He then decides to flush the rest down the toilet to prevent either himself or Asofa from contraband charges. House then asks for protective custody. However, when he sees a steaming cup of coffee, he thinks of something and denies he needs protective custody anymore. He suggests giving Nick five aspirin , which should induce anaphylaxis.
Sykes realizes how dangerous it is, but Nick agrees to try it. House calls him a moron and coward because if Nick has another attack, he will likely die. Adams finds herself agreeing with House. When House goes to do the test himself, Sykes threatens to write him up if he comes back to the clinic.
Adams follows him out of the clinic and tells him she realizes he stole the Vicodin to pay an exit tax. He asks for twenty and she gives them to him. She promises to take care of Nick and tells him to take care of himself. House takes the Vicodin to Mendelson. However, House then throws the Vicodin into the air.
Mendelson hits House, who thanks Mendelson for giving him an excuse to go back to the clinic. However, Mendelson then orders Sullivan to take him out. Sullivan hesitates because he too is afraid his sentence will be lengthened, but Mendelson threatens him. House gets more and more desperate for drugs and finally steals a bottle destined for one of Wilson's patients. Cuddy realizes House has managed to get drugs, but when he quickly solves the case, she's willing to live with it. Wilson tells Tritter he's not going to co-operate any more, even if it means both he and House might head to prison.
However, when House nearly overdoses, he had a change of heart and goes to Tritter to accept the deal. However, Tritter has found out about the stolen drugs and has withdrawn it.
Tritter is unimpressed and the court case continues despite House's angry reaction. The judge dismisses the case and Tritter backs off. He realizes nothing has changed. When Cuddy tells him he has to stop, House quits, but she agrees to take him back when she has a change of heart. However, House starts to feel the methadone is clouding his judgment, and he turns back to Vicodin. In reality, House has insulted Cuddy's daughter and sees a bottle of Oxycodone as Cuddy's lipstick.
Cuddy is reconciliatory after House embarasses her when she realizes House can't tell the difference, and House finally allows Wilson to take him to a psychiatric hospital. Although House initially tries to game the situation, he soon concedes he needs help and, after several weeks, is well enough to leave the hospital.
Nolan agrees to let him go back. They start hitting each other to see if it hurts, then start blabbing personal things about themselves. However, as he's making up his mind, Cuddy appears and tells him she's left her fiance because she's realized she's always wanted House.
When Wilson shows up and House says that Cuddy's there, then she hides, Wilson wants to know how many Vicodin House has taken. House believes it might not be Vicodin and offers to test it out. After smelling and tasting one of the pills, he puts it back and returns the bottle intact, declaring it is Vicodin.
The patient admits he was taking it to deal with the pain of his job as a janitor. When Cuddy realizes he's using again, she breaks up with him and House returns to his use of the drug. House goes on a full on Vicodin binge, ending in an episode where he jumps off a balcony into a hotel pool. However, when he feels it isn't working, he turns back to Vicodin. He takes more while he's waiting for a real surgeon to repair the damage. When they find House is about to be released, they tell him he has to come up with twenty capsules as an "exit tax" even though House won't even get that many before he's released.
House starts hoarding his pills, but flushes them down the toilet to avoid a contraband charge that will delay his parole. However, House uses it to start another distraction, throwing them in the air so he will get injured and sent back to the infirmary. She gives him back the pills. However, later when he tries to take a pill in front of Cofield, it explodes with confetti, a prank developed by Chase to get back at House for his pranks. All the compartments are open and empty and a single Vicodin is shoved in one.
He inspects it and sighs before putting it back under his pillow. No, I'm just going through a bit of withdrawal. I'm trying to survive on one a day for the next few days. The cricket is cupped in his massive hand. A guard lets House and his cart into the office where Adams is doling out meds into paper cups. He broke his arm. Or it is lupus, and he was in a fight. He was in a jostle. That's why he'd lie to the guards. He's got no reason to lie to me.
There are those eyes again. No, that wouldn't chew up the bone that fast. But reaction to meds could. Make me lose my job by showing you a patient file? How long can I assume that he's been smoking? Based on his yellow fingers. You're thinking lung cancer. I'll x-ray him on Friday. I'm out of here on Friday. Well, how about… if he throws a clot and strokes out, you can use the x-ray to do the autopsy.
Start him on blood thinners. Very interesting practice you must've run. No need for tests. Where are you going? Nick is sitting on a stool at one of the tables. You were right about Nicole. It wasn't her mom. She doesn't wanna talk to me. Listen, I'm trying to listen to your lungs, not your self-pity. You mind trying to find me a cricket? The ol' swap trick? You don't think that will piss off your cellie even more when he figures it's a different bug?
I'll dress 'em the same, like in Vertigo. Well, I'll try, but they spray so much pesticide I'm surprised we're alive. The Confederates be giving themselves spankin' new tats. They putting a claim on all of my Vicodin. Now, I love you and all, my brother, but not as much as I love my gang of crazy, roided-out Nazi bitches. It's called an acoustical shadow. It means he's got a tumor. How did you find that without a stethoscope? I didn't even know you could do this!
Start the blood thinners. So I for sure got lung cancer? All you've proven is there's an anomaly in his chest. Which apparently really bugs you. That's… that's a good idea. We're just gonna cut your earlobe a bit and check back in two minutes. If there's a little blood bubbling up, that's normal. But if it's completely clotted, it may indicate cancer.
House follows her, closing the door behind him. Are you really leaving medicine? What are you gonna do? Before I went to med school, I thought about getting a Ph. You ever heard of dark matter? The way galaxies rotate, the motion of the Universe… it means there's six times more stuff than we can detect.
It's been theorized but no one's ever proved it exists. So, uh, so you wanna research it? It's the greatest mystery there is — the theory of everything. And completely divorced from humanity. Well, me and humanity, we got together too young. You have a gift. There is something in this world you are undeniably great at. You can read people. You gotta go back to medicine.
Well, if that gift is related to what brought me here, you'll understand if I wanna check the returns policy. Is this supposed to happen? Adams leans toward him, fascinated. Asofa is asleep on his bunk, face down with his head turned to the wall. He turns his head as House uncaps a bottle of water. Jiminy didn't chirp much last night.
If it's a disease, then he's six inches under. Just so much and no more. Mm… [silence] This is where you say "thank you. House pulls out his blister pack which now contains four Vicodin. A guard lets House into the office. Adams stands up to greet him. The x-ray didn't show any tumors. The acoustical shadow was just a lipoma. She backs away and goes to her desk where she picks up the file.
You can look at the patient file if you want. Any reason I shouldn't? You're really not good at reading people, are you? But if it'll get me the file… Adams: If we add "clotting disorder" to the symptoms, it's gotta be a toxin. This guy's the only one with symptoms. It's either gotta be his cell or his work station. So maybe a solvent or detergent? Can you get me an escort to gather samples?
Why does this man have a file? Adams looks at Sykes. You need to get cotton swabs— Nick:
